Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93/100
A healthy 25% of this cuvée is Syrah aged in new oak, which impacts the aromas and flavors of the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous in a substantial way. Baking spices and vanilla are apparent, but there are plenty of bold red-fruit flavors to balance them out. The one wobble is that the alcohol (a whopping 16%) shows through a bit on the finish. I’d opt for drinking this plush, voluptuous wine over the near term.
Vinous – 93-95/100
Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of ripe dark berries, candied lavender, cola and white pepper, accompanied by a hint of musky earth in the background. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering alluringly sweet black currant, cherry liqueur and spicecake flavors that pick up a refreshingly bitter edge with air. The dark berry note repeats strongly on the youthfully tannic finish, which clings with superb persistence and lingering florality.

Dit domein behoort zonder enige twijfel tot de top, niet alleen in Châteauneuf en Frankrijk, maar in de hele wijnwereld !

If a prize were given to the Rhône Valley estate that had improved the most in the shortest period of time, it would undoubtedly go to that of Pascal and Vincent Maurel, who took over Clos Saint-Jean after their father passed away in 2002. Since then, they have made a succession of world-class wines that are out of this world. One of the largest estates in Châteauneuf du Pape, Clos Saint-Jean has an amazing number of old vine parcels in its 112+ acres. No doubt the hiring of renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie has also increased the quality of these offerings.
