Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 99/100
Bottled only in magnum, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum was made entirely from Grenache planted in 1905 and aged in new demi-muids, yet it has completely absorbed any trace of barrel. Incredibly intense and dramatic, it combines savory notes of licorice and dark roses with black cherries and dried spices. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a mind-bendingly long finish, it’s a tour de force that may prove to be perfection for some readers.
Clos Saint Jean
Robert Parker – Wine Advocate 2008
What a remarkable group of wines is emerging from proprietor Vincent Maurel, who works with the genius of Southern Rhône viticulture and winemaking, Philippe Cambie. A succession of superb wines began at this estate in 2003, when it finally began to live up to its superb potential. This may well be one of the most exciting addresses not only in France, but in the entire wine world. …
Robert Parker – Wine Advocate 2011
If a prize were given to the Rhône Valley estate that had improved the most in the shortest period of time, it would undoubtedly go to that of Pascal and Vincent Maurel, who took over Clos Saint-Jean after their father passed away in 2002. Since then, they have made a succession of world-class wines that are out of this world. One of the largest estates in Châteauneuf du Pape, Clos Saint-Jean has an amazing number of old vine parcels in its 112+ acres. No doubt the hiring of renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie has also increased the quality of these offerings.
