The 2019 La Dame de Montrose, which I tasted in June and September 2021, has a fresh mulberry, black plum and granite-scented bouquet that is quite precocious; touches of morel appear in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite structured and almost Pauillac-like, thanks to veins of graphite toward the finish provided by the 48% Cabernet Sauvignon. Saline on the aftertaste, though not tremendously long, this is a very promising Deuxième Vin.

The 2019 Gloria personifies classic Saint-Julien, offering blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and tobacco scents, maybe a little conservative in style, but unashamed about that. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins. Fresh and saline, this gets the saliva going with a precise, persistent finish and leaves hints of graphite on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The Wine Advocate – Robert Parker – 91-93/100
Deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Gloria comes bounding out of the glass with all the energy of a new puppy, featuring notes of baked plums, black cherry preserves and warm cassis plus hints of spice box, pencil lead, woodsmoke and dried mint. Medium to full-bodied (the alcohol states 14.2%), the palate is packed with juicy black fruit flavors, framed by approachable, ripe, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing pleasantly earthy.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 90/100
The 2019 Les Fiefs de Lagrange fulfills its promise from barrel. It feels harmonious and engaging on the nose of brambly red fruit, undergrowth and freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite weighty and mouth-filling for a Deuxième Vin, offering satisfying sapidity on the finish. Very fine.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 95/100
The 2019 Lagrange, which was picked over the longest period ever, has a compelling bouquet of beautifully defined black fruit laced with cedar and light graphite notes. The palate is smooth, fresh and vibrant, with great depth, perfectly judged acidity and a brilliantly focused finish. Winemaker Mathieu Bordes has crafted the best Lagrange in recent years, a benchmark for the estate.

The Wine Advocate – Robert Parker – 93-95/100
Displaying a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 Lagrange charges out of the gate with bright, shiny, classic cassis, cedar chest and clove oil scents followed by hints of ripe black cherries, mulberries, spice cake and menthol. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound with taut, crunchy black fruits, supported by rock-solid grainy tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and invigorating.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 89/100
The 2019 Connetable de Talbot has a perfumed, well-defined bouquet with a skip in its step, featuring red berry fruit, cinnamon and touches of brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. This is a well-balanced Connetable with a bit more body than previous vintages, slightly savory in style and maybe missing a little length. But as a Deuxième Vin, it works well.

The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages is an attractive, fruity wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Sweet red berries, blood orange, mint, spice and pomegranate are nicely pushed forward in this attractive, lithe Pauillac. A few hours of air does wonders here.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 90-92+/100
Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc and without any new oak, the very deep purple-black colored 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages rolls seductively out of the glass with fragrant notes of candied violets, rose hip tea and fragrant soil over a core of crushed blackberries, warm blackcurrants and kirsch plus wafts of chocolate mint and crushed rocks. Full, rich, wonderfully concentrated and well structured, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long.

Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 89-92/100
The 2018 Lacoste-Borie is plump, silky and absolutely delicious. Bright red cherry, plum and mocha add lovely shades of nuance throughout. I would prefer to drink this succulent, mid-weight Pauillac over the next handful of years, while it retains its youthful juiciness. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 88-90/100
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Lacoste-Borie opens with baked plums, stewed cherries, cassis and milk chocolate with earth and herbs. Medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy, it has a good fruit core and an herbal lift on the finish.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 89/100
The 2019 Citran has a lively nose, not complex but offering ample black fruit, wild mint and light touches of orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly hard entry. This is a stocky Haut-Médoc, a little drier than its peers, delivering plenty of grip and an almost briny finish. It needs knitting together and some of its rough edges smoothed out, but that might come with time.

The Wine Advocate – Robert Parker – 88-90/100
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Citran sashays out of the glass with gorgeous notions of chocolate-covered cherries, blackcurrant pastilles and black raspberries plus suggestions of cinnamon stick, red roses and pencil shavings with a waft of wild thyme. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling, ripe black berry flavors with amazing tension and nice, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with a peppery kick.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 94/100
The 2019 Sociando-Mallet has gained composure since I tasted the barrel sample. Now it has engaging red and black fruit, cedar and freshly rolled tobacco scents, focused and quite vigorous. The palate is structured, with firm grip, very well-judged acidity, good substance and a cohesive, black-pepper- and pencil-lead-tinged finish that has real length. Top-drawer Sociando-Mallet.

Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 96/100
The 2017 Lafleur-Petrus is elegant, polished and wonderfully refined from start to finish. Everything just falls into place effortlessly. Aromatic, sculpted fruit gives the 2017 its sense of regal beauty and total finesse. Beautifully lifted and precise, it is framed by gentle, silky tannins. Small red berries, mint, blood orange, spice and licorice develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s cashmere-like softness that impresses most. In 2017 Lafleur-Petrus is a real standout.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 94+/100
A blend of 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 la Fleur-Petrus is a little youthfully reticent to begin, opening to offer glimpses at kirsch, black raspberries and warm plums plus nuances of potpourri, powdered cinnamon, dusty soil and dried lavender. Medium-bodied, the palate is finely knit and elegant with a firm frame of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 91/100
The 2018 Noaillac has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, black tea/Earl Grey and light earthy scents, classy and gaining intensity with aeration. As I mentioned in my original barrel review, there is something reminiscent of a Graves. Very well balanced with a structured, fresh and lightly spiced finish that lingers. Excellent.

Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 93/100
Opulent and racy, the 2018 Laroze hits all the right notes. Cinnamon, new leather, lavender and cedar add gorgeous aromatic top notes to a core of succulent red cherry fruit. Soft contours add immediacy and allure throughout. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 92/100
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Laroze comes prancing out of the glass with exuberant scents of black cherry preserves, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus wafts of cedar chest, rose oil and cinnamon toast with a touch of cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is soft and elegantly styled, featuring lovely freshness and a long fragrant finish.

Vinous – Neil Martin – 94/100
The 2018 Grand Mayne keeps everything under wraps on the nose, at least for the first 60 minutes, then it blossoms to offer gorgeous pure blackberry, briary, crushed stone and light rose petal aromas. The new oak is beautifully integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, superb acidity, gentle grip and an almost symmetrical finish of laser-like precision. An outstanding Grand Mayne, certainly one of the finest in recent years.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 92/100
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Grand Mayne sashays out of the glass with flashy, upfront notes of preserved plums, stewed black cherries and blackberry pie, plus hints of eucalyptus, wild sage, lavender and cloves. The full-bodied palate is seductively fruity with a sturdy frame of chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a spicy kick.

Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 98/100
The 2018 Canon is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Maybe more so. Vertical and explosive in the glass, Canon sizzles with tension and vibrancy. Readers will find a majestic, soaring Grand Cru Classé that captures all the magic of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau. Canon exudes mind-blowing precision and deliciousness. It is another magnificent effort from Technical Director Nicolas Audebert and his team.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 97+/100
A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Canon has a pH of 3.69 and 14% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple in color, it tumbles effortlessly out of the glass with a gorgeous perfume of candied violets, preserved plums, black cherry compote and Ceylon tea with hints of kirsch, powdered cinnamon, chocolate box and fertile loam. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruit layers, supported by plush, oh-so-soft tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 91-93/100
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 De Sales rocks up with expressive blackberries and black cherries notes with an undercurrent of tilled soil, truffles and mossy bark. Medium to full-bodied, it has a solid structure of ripe, rounded tannins and impressive freshness, finishing with bright black fruit layers.

Vinous – Antonio Galloni – 97/100
The 2018 La Fleur-Pétrus is positively rapturous, just as it was from barrel. Mother Nature appears to have taken all the signatures of this site and turned up the volume. Loud. Rich and beautifully layered, La Fleur-Pétrus dazzles with magnificent richness and a finish that is eternal. Blood orange, mint, rose petal, spice and sweet red berry fruit build over time. I can’t remember tasting a better young La Fleur-Pétrus. Give it a few years to shed some baby fat. Magnificent.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 97+/100
A blend of 91% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 la Fleur-Petrus has a medium garnet-purple color and a slightly closed-down nose to begin, soon unfurling to reveal earthy notions of black truffles, mossy tree bark and damp soil, over a core of plum preserves, wild blueberries and redcurrants, plus a fragrant waft of menthol lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate has the most gorgeous, velvety texture with well-knit freshness giving lift to the densely packed black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with a beguiling perfume. Stunning. Give it a good 3-4 years in bottle and drink it over the next 30 years or more.
