Wafting from the glass with notes of honeyed orchard fruit, elderflowers and beeswax, Gautier Thevenet’s 2018 Viré-Clessé Quintaine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with a sweet core of fruit, lively acids and a long, saline finish. The vintage means that this is especially charming out of the gates, but it’s likely to be impressively long-lived all the same.

On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and expressive, with good concentration, succulent acids and a fragrant finish. Charming and elegantly exotic, this will offer ten to 15 years of gratification.

S’appuyant sur une tradition ancienne de vins moelleux (« levroutés », disait-on autrefois), Jean Thévenet et son fils Gautier ont beaucoup œuvré pour la reconnaissance des vins à sucres résiduels dans cette partie de la Bourgogne. Leur production comprend également une très belle série de vins secs, dont l’ampleur et la richesse peuvent parfois désarçonner quelques palais inexpérimentés. Le domaine a la bonne idée de mettre sur le marché des cuvées souvent prêtes à boire. En dehors de la Bongran, ils produisent également des vins sur le domaine de Roally (Mâcon-Villages) et Emilian Gillet (Viré-Clessé).

The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru offers light lemon zest and orange blossom scents on the nose. It feels quite tight at the moment. The palate is well balanced with notes of mandarin and orange peel on the entry. Tight toward the finish, which should put on more weight by the time of bottling.
De kleur is helder geel/groen met strokleurige accenten. Aroma’s van rijp fruit (peer, mango) domineren de neus, met op de achtergrond nog meer verwennerij van florale noties (jasmijn) die zeer typisch zijn voor de Godello-druif. De smaak is fris en crispy. De structuur is verbluffend met een mooie balans en een perfect afgemeten aciditeit. De lang aanhoudende finale heeft een klein tikkeltje bitter in de mond (pompelmoes), waardoor het groots karakter van de wijn wordt beklemtoond tot op het laatste moment. Deze witte wijn toont complexiteit en elegantie, waarmee hij de Godello-druif alle eer aandoet die ze verdient. A Coroa scoort heel hoog als ambassadeur van de appellatie !

Vivid straw. Expressive Meyer lemon, pear and honeysuckle aromas are lifted by a chalky mineral nuance and a spicy ginger note. Silky and sharply delineated on the palate, offering vibrant orchard and citrus fruit flavors that display power but not excess fat. Closes tight and impressively long, with resonating citrus fruit and mineral notes and a sexy floral nuance.

The 2014 A Coroa is pure, fresh, unoaked Godello that is quite straightforward. It is fruit-driven and fresh with flavors of pears and apples, and good acidity.
De uitgelezen ligging van de wijngaard in de vallei van de Isle, samen met de perfecte aanplanting van Merlot (80%) en Cabernet druiven, bezorgen jaarlijks een zeer fijne, karaktervolle wijn. Deze ronde en volmondige rode wijn is zacht en laat zich niet vlug vergeten. Zijn kleur is mooi donkerrood. Aroma’s van kruiden en braambessen zijn volop aanwezig. Een krachtige volle afdronk waar de aanwezigheid van hout zich zeer goed begint te versmelten. Een klassieke Bordeaux die zich met veel gerechten laat combineren. Heeft eveneens een mooi bewaarpotentieel.

The 2018 La Commanderie is an attractive, understated Pomerol. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely aromatic presence, La Commanderie is beautifully lifted throughout. Drink this mid-weight, easy-going Pomerol over the next decade or so.

The 2019 La Commanderie is laced with scents of cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried flowers and crushed red berries. Medium in body and lifted in feel, La Commanderie is a decidedly understated Pomerol with lovely aromatic presence and plenty of immediacy.

The 2018 Lagrange is charming and gracious. Sweet, lifted aromatics and mid-weight structure give the 2018 tons of immediacy. Bright red berries, blood orange, mint, spice, rose petal and cedar build with time in the glass. Polished, silky tannins grace the beautifully persistent finish. Best of all, the 2018 will be ready to go with only minimal cellaring.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Lagrange explodes from the glass with bombastic notes of crème de cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and baked red and black plums with suggestions of rose oil, cedar chest, pencil lead and hoisin. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic vibrancy for the ripeness, packed with juicy black fruits and compelling tension with a finely grained texture to support, finishing on a lingering mineral note. Nicely done!

The 2018 Sociando Mallet delivers a convincing bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, cedar and light earthy/terra-cotta aromas and nicely integrated oak. The palate is svelte on the entry, offering very good acidity, layered red berry fruit laced with cassis and crushed stone, and an atypically plush, sensual finish. This might well be the best Sociando Mallet I have encountered at this stage, and it will age with style and grace. Chapeau, Jean and Sylvie Gautreau! Highly recommended.
Grote broer Ch Sociando Mallet behoort tot de top van de beste wijnen uit Haut Médoc, waardoor deze tweede wijn een interessant kantje krijgt. La Demoiselle is samengesteld uit 50% Cabernet Sauvignon en 50% Merlot, uit wijngaarden met jonge aanplant en een bodem waar een grotere concentratie klei te vinden is. Hier kan je op je twee oren slapen dat je heel veel kwaliteit krijgt voor een prijs die slechts de helft is van de eerste wijn. Deze Demoiselle heeft een bijzonder fijne neus met aroma’s van rood fruit en vanille. Subtiele structuur met mooie fruitaccenten, ondersteund door een fijne aciditeit. Finessevol en elegant, zoals het een ware dame betaamt! Voorbestemd om menig wijnliefhebbershart te veroveren !

The 2018 La Sirène de Giscours is a lovely second wine laced with radiant red berry fruit, cedar, smoke, licorice and dried flowers. Medium in body and nicely textured, the 2018 has so much to offer. It is an especially racy, inviting second wine from Giscours. The high percentage of Cabernet Franc (21%) adds striking perfume and aromatic depth. The blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc and 13% Merlot.
Heerlijke aroma’s van zwart fruit en kruiden in combinatie met fijne houtachtige nuances tonen meteen wat deze prachtige rode wijn in zijn mars heeft. De aanzet in de mond is zacht en vlezig, evoluerend naar een breed aromatisch palet van zwart fruit (kers, braam …). Het geheel is perfect in balans. Dit is een zeer gulle wijn met strakke tannines die een mooie toekomst beloven.
De eerste aanzet in de neus is eerder discreet, maar geef deze wijn een beetje tijd en heerlijke aroma’s van peer, perzik, acaciabloem en vlierbes onthullen zich. Zeer finessevolle wijn! In de mond proeven we een prachtige, volumineuze, krachtige wijn, ondersteund door een mooie acciditeit. De boterachtige afdronk maakt het geheel zeer aangenaam. Deze wijn levert instant plezier!
Een uitzonderlijk fijne Beaune Cent Vignes tekent de stijl van dit huis: goed fruit, mondvullend en homogeen gestructureerd.
De wijnen van Domaine Simon Bize worden stuk voor stuk gemarkeerd door hun sappig fruit. De rode Savigny onderscheidt zich door zijn nobele aroma’s van rood fruit met een licht kruidige toets, en een transparante structuur. Een enorme frisheid en elegantie vullen het rijtje aan. Een pure en geraffineerde opbouw, waarbij de tannines mooi opgenomen zijn in het geheel. Alle rode wijnen van Patrick Bize hebben een veelbelovend bewaarpotentieel.

The 2019 Saivgny-lès-Beaune Village has a well-defined peppery bouquet that comes from the 100% whole bunch. The palate is fresh on the entry, featuring red and black fruit, and slightly briny, with white pepper toward the finish. Those who like a bit of stem in their Savigny will love this.

Mingling aromas of peonies and plums with hints of wintergreen and bergamot, Bize’s 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village is medium to full-bodied, lively and perfumed, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit framed by powdery tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. In other words, it’s representative of the domaine’s exquisitely charming range this year.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a sophisticated nose of blackberry, loamy damp soil, raspberry and light cracked black pepper aromas that build nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp bead of acidity; very harmonious. White pepper and clove appear toward a finish that leaves the tongue tingling after it has departed. Superb.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses is a striking wine, soaring from the glass with scents of wilted roast petals, bergamot, oriental spices, wild berries and plums. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it’s vibrant and velvety, with lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is an immensely good Savigny from Chisa Bize and her team.
