The 2018 Pape Clément is such a beautiful and inviting wine. Silky, perfumed and layered, the 2018 shows the more restrained, vibrant style that has become the norm here in recent years. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and spice are front and center, while the oak – in the past so strong here – is really dialed back. The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow in the cellar over the next several decades. The purity of the flavors is just striking.

Medium in body, with striking aromatic presence and terrific persistence, the 2018 is just impeccable. The Clémentin is an understated wine with a ton of character. It’s a gorgeous second wine from Pape Clément and Bernard Magrez.

The 2018 La Réserve de Malartic-Lagravière is a very pretty, fruity wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Hints of iron, cedar, tobacco, mint and dried herbs add an attractive, savory touch. There is, in my view, a bit too much oak that is felt in the slightly aggressive tannins, but that won’t be an issue if the 2018 is enjoyed over the next handful of years.

The 2018 Château La Bridane has a lively, pretty if simple bouquet of crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit, light rose petal aromas and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic red fruit but well-judged acidity. It is a Saint-Julien that stays within its limits, which actually engenders an elegant and more-ish wine. An easygoing but assiduously crafted 2018 that will give pleasure over the next decade.

Palate-staining red berry, citrus fruit, nectarine and lavender flavors show fine definition and smoothly blend depth and energy. Shows strong tension and repeating minerality on the strikingly long finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind.

The 2017 Alsace Riesling Le Kottabe was still discreet and shy on the slightly reductive nose when I tasted it some weeks after bottling, in October 2018. On the palate, this is a vibrantly fresh, pure and salty wine with intensity, lots of crunchy minerals and stunning airiness. The finish is salty and firm, and I wouldn’t believe this is a wine sourced in the valley floor. It’s far too piquant and fresh I’d guess.

Château Reynon is eigendom van Denis Dubourdieu (o.a. tevens Clos Floridène). Deze wijn van de hand van Denis Dubourdieu heeft ons uitermate bekoord! Verleidelijke donkerrode kleur. Bijzonder aangenaam boeket van licoreus zwarte besjes en smoky nuances, superzachte wijn met een expressieve, elegante smaak, waarin fris rood fruit lekker sappig proeft. Mooie ronde tannines. Deze rode wijn is een zeer goede referentie voor een Bordeaux klassieke stijl, het ultieme bewijs dat goede Bordeaux niet noodzakelijk duur hoeft te zijn.

The 2018 Reynon is an absolute delight. Plump, juicy and so inviting, the 2018 checks all the right boxes. Succulent red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, new leather and tobacco wrap around the palate. Fleshy and harmonious, Reynon is superb. It is also one of the very finest values readers will find anywhere in the world.

The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Reynon sings of warm blueberries, blackberry coulis and black raspberries with touches of garrigue and lavender. Medium to full-boded, it has a firm, grainy texture and lovely freshness supporting the muscular fruit, finishing perfumed.

Als twee honden vechten om een been (Rhône versus Zuid-Afrika), loopt een derde er wel eens mee heen. De verrassende winnaar is weliswaar een Franse wijn, maar niet uit de Rhônevallei, wel uit Minervois in Languedoc, wat nog zuidelijker is gelegen. Het domein, Château d’Oupia, heeft wel een grote reputatie, en bevestigt deze hiermee.
De Chianti Classico Riserva wordt enkel geproduceerd in de beste wijnjaren, met het fruit van de “Bugialla” wijngaard. Gemaakt van 100% Sangiovese en gelagerd in 400 L houten tonnen voor 24 maanden alvorens te bottelen en nog 1 jaar te laten liggen op fles. Gemiddelde productie van 800 flessen. De wijn heeft een robijnrode kleur met aroma’s van wilde bessen, zoethout and tabak. Volle en afgeronde tannines met een stevige structuur en een goed bewaarpotentieel. Aanbevolen bij gegrild of gesmoord vlees en bij oudere kazen.

Proprietor Catherine Papon-Nouvel turned out a gorgeous Clos Saint Julien in 2018. Black cherry, plum, espresso, menthol, licorice and smoke build as this sumptuous, full-bodied Saint-Émilion shows off its curvy, racy personality. A wine of real character, Clos Saint Julien is a winner. The tiny 1.2 hectare vineyard sits on Saint-Émilion’s vaunted limestone plateau and is planted with 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the same blend as the wine itself.

Catherine Papon-Nouvel, the owner/winemaker at Petit Gravet Aîné, owns this 1.2-hectare vineyard situated just west of Château Soutard atop the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. The 40-year-old vineyard is certified organic, and yields in 2018 were 37 hectoliters per hectare. Aging is in 100% new barrels for an estimated 18 months. From the Gaudet and Le Jardin lieux-dits and blended of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Clos St Julien saunters languorously out of the glass with notions of baked blueberries, spice cake and plum preserves plus hints of mocha, Christmas cake and sautéed herbs. Full, rich and decadent, it has tons of spicy sparks and a plush texture, finishing with a refreshing lift.

The 2018 La Pointe is more immediate on the nose than it was when tasted from barrel, offering scents of blackberry and mint, touches of violet, and perhaps more red fruit than I noticed before. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry, the black fruit tinged with truffle and clove. Good grip here. Slightly gamy toward the finish, with a persistent spicy aftertaste. Give this 2–3 years in bottle and you should have a delicious 2018.

A stratospheric, regal wine, Calon Ségur embodies all the best qualities of the vintage. Rich to the point of being exotically ripe, 2018 reminds me of the 2014 in its composition, but with more of everything. On the palate, the 2018 is towering and statuesque, with soaring structure and tremendous overall intensity. Striking aromatic top notes and bright saline underpinnings give the 2018 its energy, tension and nuance. As in 2014, the entirety of the château’s Cabernet Franc went into the Grand Vin. Inky, powerful and explosive, Calon Ségur is a headspinning wine. Don’t miss it!
Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate – 96-98/100
The 2018 Calon-Ségur is blended of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (14.9% alcohol). It is anticipated to age for 20 months in barriques, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs just a little coaxing before it reveals seductive notes of baked cherries, warm cassis, licorice and smoked meats with nuances of hoisin, camphor, Chinese five spice and dried roses with a waft of cardamom. Full-bodied and completely packed with concentrated black fruit and spice layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a wicked backbone of freshness giving an energetic lift to the very long finish. There’s lots of brightness coming from the Cabernet Franc component in here, but it is nonetheless a decadent expression.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet unwinds in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet mingling raspberries and blood orange with savory bass notes of woo smoke, loamy soil, espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, concentrated and lively, with a deep and tight-knit core, bright acids and a long finish.

The 2014 Lanessan is wonderfully silky and nuanced in the glass. Bright red stone fruits, cranberry, blood orange, mint, spices and crushed flowers add nuance in a mid-weight, polished wine that should drink beautifully over the near and medium term.
“Un Jaja” is het jargon voor een glas wijn op de Parijse terrasjes of in de Parijse brasseries. In 1991 pakte Château de Jau uit met een klassevolle, lekkere, aangename drinkwijn. Zowel witte, rosé als rode Jaja staan thans synoniem voor elegante, speelse wijntjes met heel veel drinkplezier. Het label is een creatie van de moderne kunstenaar Ben Vauthier, bekend vanwege zijn stereotype opschriften. Zijn levensbeschouwing ‘La recherche de la vérité’ sluit perfect aan bij het karakter van de Jaja’s.
Exotische neus met aroma’s van verse ananas en kokosnoot. Een lekkere, ronde Chardonnay met een mooie frisheid en een minerale toets. Ideaal als aperitief, bij gegrilde vis en kazen.
