The 2016 Echo de Lynch Bages is deep garnet-purple colored and opens with kirsch, redcurrant jelly and baked blackcurrants with nuances of tilled soil and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, packed, elegant, refreshing and tightly wound with firm tannins, finishing long.
Deze Côtes d’Auxerre ontwikkelt mooie bloemenaroma’s, acacia, amandel, peche, getoast brood en een vleugje hout. Zeer genereus in de mond, raszuivere wijn die zijn intensiteit en mineraliteit ontleent aan de terroir.
Kan al jong gedronken worden, maar heeft toch een mooi bewaarpotentieel. Uitstekende begeleider van coquilles Saint Jacques, visgerechten, gevogelte en wit vlees.

‘The 2014 Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre Blanc, which is matured in stainless-steel tanks and had been bottled three weeks prior to my visit, did not quite possess the same delineation or mineralité as the Aligoté and may have been suffering some bottle shock. The palate is very stony on the entry, chalky textured and tensile, very distinctive with what can only be described as “liquid stone” on the finish. I admire the uncompromising nature of this wine. I’ve scored conservatively, but I would not be surprised to find it garnering a higher evaluation after 12 to 24 months.’

Medium-bodied and laden with juicy black fruits plus loads of spicy accents, it has a finely grained, approachable texture and great length.

The 2016 Lacoste-Borie has come together nicely during its élevage. Medium in body, with lovely aromatic nuance, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Sweet tobacco, menthol, cedar and herbs add lovely aromatic complexity throughout. Drink it over the next handful of years.

The 2016 Lacoste-Borie is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, cropped at 50 hectoliters per hectare. It has a clean and precise bouquet, not as complex as some of its peers, yet with thoroughly enjoyable raspberry and blackcurrant leaf tinged with cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, slightly dry tannin on the entry, hints of dark chocolate interlacing the black fruit with a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish.

The 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a powerful, exciting wine. That is the good news. But readers are going to have to be patient, as the 2016 shows very little of the upfront appeal that was so evident when it was in barrel. In the glass, the 2016 is sumptuous, vivid and incredibly detailed, with generous super-ripe red fruit and floral notes that develop with time. The wine’s concentration and vibrancy lead me to think it will enjoy a very long life. Wow!

The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Grand-Puy-Lacoste gives up pure kirsch and red and black currants with violets and baking spices. Medium-bodied, firm and grainy, it’s very expressive with good concentration and length.

The 2016 Sociando Mallet is a wine of real depth and power. My feeling is that the 2016 will need at least a few years to be at its very best. Even so, the wine’s complexity and overall pedigree are impossible to miss. Plum, lavender, chocolate and spice add striking layers of nuance. This is a very strong showing from Sociando Mallet.

The 2016 Sociando-Mallet has a refulgent purple/black color. It has a very intense and rich, you might say “ambitious” bouquet with layers of small black cherries, blueberry and a touch of sloes, less tertiary than previous vintages and certainly more opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin that almost disguise the firm structure underneath. I admire the completeness of this Sociando-Mallet, the neatly embroidered new oak and the freshness on the finish. This 2016 is totally convincing. It comes highly recommended as one of the best wines produced at this estate in the northern Médoc. This is an outstanding wine from Mon. Gartreau.

The 2016 Petit Gravet Ainé is dense, sumptuous and exotic in its beauty. I am quite taken aback by the wine’s sheer concentration, which among other things, hides some of the expressive Cabernet Franc signatures that are often present in the wine. Even so, the 2016 is wonderfully persistent. Fruit intensity and structure are nicely balanced, while the aromatics need a bit of time to fully emerge.

The 2016 Petit Gravet Aine is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot aged for 14 months in 100% new Taransaud and Ana Sélection French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges forth with gregarious roses and violets scents with a core of kirsch, redcurrant jelly and wild blueberries plus tilled soil, pencil shavings and fallen leaves. Rich, opulent and perfumed in the mouth, it is full-bodied and very firm with wonderfully ripe tannins and a long spicy finish.

The 2016 Bélair-Monange is easily the most closed of all of J-P Moueix’s wines when I taste them together. It is stubbornly tight in the glass and then coquettishly unfurls mineral-rich red berry fruit mixed with rose petals; the perfume is captivating. The palate is well balanced, with velvety tannin and perfectly judged acidity, and very, very harmonious. More and more black fruit seems to join the chorus line toward the finish, which fans out gloriously, demonstrating superlative persistence. The best Bélair-Monange to date, and an accomplished, riveting Saint-Émilion.

A blend of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Belair Monange comes strutting out of the glass like a total rock star with gregarious red cherries, blackberries and warm plums scents plus hints of lavender, rose hip tea, powdered cinnamon, cigar box and camphor. Medium-bodied, it completely fills the palate with vibrant red and black fruit layers, framed by a firm backbone of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
